One wonders which bit of his extraordinarily diverse career they liked – he has built and designed gardens, overseen restorations, lectured on garden design, written and made broadcasts about plants and gardening, been an estate manager and landscape historian (for Historic Scotland) and was consultant to the National Trust where he redesigned its careership training programme.
